Eligh, Scarub, and Murs, collectively known as the Three Melancholy
Gypsys (3MG) are three wordsmiths from the Living Legends with a knack
for wordplay, delivery, and styles upon styles upon styles. Their first
release since 2000’s “Live in Tokyo,” “Grand
Caravan to the Rim of the World” is a mystical journey through
sound both musically and lyrically. On “Chant” the trio recites words of wisdom, one line at a time. “3 Rings” presents life as a circus with each type of a person as an attraction, like the “ghetto youth who gracefully dodges bullets on his way to play hoops” and the single mother who “makes meals appear out of thin air though the cabinets and refrigerators all seem bare.” Sure to be a favorite for many is “And If,” a song about women filled with metaphors and similes; “I used to know this girl as fly as Saturdays, with a wholesome type of soul like a Sunday, had a straight up approach like a Monday, strong, had long legs that stretched past Tuesday” raps Scarub over the laid-back melodic tune. The production carries a mellow vibe, putting listeners at ease. Eligh
incorporates a variety of rythms and grooves but not enough as the album
becomes too chill and starts to drag towards the end, especially on
“Child 2 Man” which features Mystic singing and reciting
spoken word without the emcees’ presence. “Grand Caravan…”
is a well-crafted and poetic album with both dope beats and rhymes.
Anyone with an appreciation for thought-provoking and witty wordworking
should enjoy this album. – Zoneil Maharaj |
