American Hi-Fi
Hearts on Parade
(Maverick)

In the alternate universe of American Hi-Fi, the geeks get the girls. That’s the nice-guy, common-man quality that rings through the Los Angeles-via-Boston band’s music. American Hi-Fi, which had a hit a few years ago with “Flavor of the Weak,” is led by Stacy Jones, former drummer of alternative acts Veruca Salt and Letters to Cleo. On the band’s latest CD, “Hearts on Parade,” American Hi-Fi writes and plays bright, melodic songs about girls who got away. Unlike most rock bands that burst with bravado, these guys happily play the role of the underdog. “Even losers can get lucky sometimes,” they tell us on the catchy “The Geeks Get the Girls.” A few pop culture references to ZZ Top and others are also sure to get a smile. The album is co-produced by the band and Butch Walker, who has worked with Avril Lavigne and Bowling for Soup. Together, they create a sound that recalls the power pop days of the 1970s. Feeling a little lonesome for Cheap Trick or maybe Joe Jackson? Try American Hi-Fi. - D. Kimura
