The south is running the radio these days. Heavy bass, a loud voice (or a whisper), a catchy hook, and a southern drawl is all you need to make money. And if there’s money to be made in rap, you know P. Diddy’s not going to miss an opportunity. Capitalizing on the crunk craze, the latest offering from Bad Boy Entertainment are the Boyz N Da Hood with their self-titled debut. I’ve never been big on crunk. I miss the days of the old slow Geto Boys “We Can’t Be Stopped” Goodie Mob “Soul Food” Outkast “Southern Playalistic” UGK “Hard to Swallow” southern style. Now, all you gotta do is shout stuff like “Bet yo ass gon’ get stomped, DON’T PUT CHA HANDS ON ME!” and you’ve got a hit. Some of it makes for funny listening and some of it is good to just wild out to. P. Diddy calls his new money makers the “NWA of the south”
and they definitely are some gangster ish. There’s a lot of murder,
thuggery, and hyped beats to get you amped and wild whenever you listen
to it. If you dig the southern fried rap, you’ll enjoy this album
but don’t expect anything special as it sounds the same as everything
else on the radio. - Zoneil Maharaj
