Dave Holland Big Band
Overtime
Dare2 Records

Bassist-band leader-composer Dave Holland’s first release on his own label, Dare2 Records, is a rich, sweeping affair, highlighting not only Holland but his talented ensemble. At the heart of “Overtime” is the opening four-part “The Monterey Suite” commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival. The music was first performed there days after the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy. “Overtime” was then recorded in 2002, but is only now being released. An outstanding effort, the eight-song CD features seven original compositions. The joyous opening number, “Bring It On,” sets the tone for the whole album. It is a richly textured ensemble piece, but there’s plenty of room for solo work by Chris Potter on tenor saxophone and Robin Eubanks on trombone. Holland’s intricate and upbeat compositions allow for many of the big band’s 13 members to flex their musical muscles. The brass section is kept busy throughout “Overtime.” Other notable tunes on the disc include the romantic “A Time Remembered” and the free-spirited “Last Minute Man.” Although the band has been around for only five years, it is quickly proving to be a source of fresh, innovative music. -- D.
