Everyone has been telling me to check out Devendra, and then last week, like a sign from above, this CD showed up. I can’t speak to whether he’s grown or evolved or betrayed his fans or is ready to break out to the big time, but I can say that his brand of indie folk is very charming. The breathy Spanish language vocals of “Santa Maria Da Feira” , coupled with the occasional twinkling flute is quite exotic. “Heard Somebody Say” is kind of Beatles-esque. And so on. Like many forward thinking folkies these days one of the big strengths of Devendra is the production. At times the washes of reverb are almost overwhelming, but everything serves the greater purpose. As the album progresses, things get a bit more uptempo, which is good. I keep thinking, I’m going to have to listen to this one again. - Will Seeley |
