Fantastic Four
(20th Century Fox)
And now, here’s an example of a blockbuster and a Marvel comic book adaptation gone bad. Spiderman 2 combined special effects with a poignant love story and via a great script, produced a sequel that was arguably better than the original. By comparison, Fantastic Four was shallow and annoying with characters that bickered at each other for the better part of 106 minutes. The CGI wasn’t terrible, but there were times when it was obvious that miniatures were used to represent full-scale objects. It was damn near impossible to empathize with any of the superheroes and the ending was so predictable, that even the actors seemed bored. Despite getting panned by nearly every critic who matters, the movie was a huge box office success and that bodes well for DVD sales. I can’t recommend this, but your mileage may vary.--David Bassin
