Now that George Lucas has brought the Star Wars saga to a rousing conclusion,
it’s only fitting that Mel Brooks should come out with a special
edition of Spaceballs to capitalize on the event. The farce is with
you every step of the way in this spoof of the Jedi legend, starring
John Candy, Rich Moranis, Bill Pullman and Brooks himself as the evil
overlord President Scroob who’s out to steal Earth’s air
for their own dying planet. While many of Brooks’ films are sophomoric
and filled with jokes that aren’t funny the second time around,
Spaceballs is an exception to that rule. One of the reasons might be
its references to other classic sci-fi films like Planet Of The Apes,
Star Trek and Alien. Another might be the writing, that found Brooks
at the top of his game, but then again it might all come down to Joan
Rivers as the voice of the robot Dot Matrix. Put this on after seeing
Revenge Of The Sith and see if you don’t laugh your ass off. -
