It doesn't get much more extreme than this. And I don't mean the tattooed, mohawked, Exploited T-shirt wearing uniforms of our special friends on Telegraph. I mean extreme death metal, and Hate Eternal undoubtedly live up to their moniker with I, Monarch. In fact, I haven't heard anything this irate since G.G. Allin decided his mouth wasn't the best orifice for a microphone. Former Morbid Angel guitarist Erik Rutan leads the assault, giving the aforementioned band a run for their money. Remember all the cool songs he wrote on the Morbid Angel album, Dominate? I, Monarch is, in many ways, a logical continuation of this songwriting style; an astonishing blend of utter ferocity and discordant melody. I'm not one to be easily impressed with musicianship, but the execution on I, Monarch is nothing short of mind-boggling. Drummer Derek Roddy plays like he's being chased by a rabid wolverine! The furry beast is hot on his heels, and any signs of slowing down means a swift chomp from the fiend. Animal attacks aside, Hate Eternal have truly "pushed the boundaries of death metal to uncharted territories". For once, that cliché rings true. --Andrew Andermatt |
