Joe Strummer
Walker Soundtrack
(Astralwerks)

I actually had a friend take this CD and then bring it back, complaining that it had nothing to do with Joe Strummer. Well, that ain’t totally true, amigo, but the prevailing vibe is kind of mariachi film music, cuban-esque grooves with far away trumpets and strumming acoustic guitars. If you’ve got the stomach to sit through an instrumental soundtrack, you’re in for it. There’s cool marimbas and strange and sudden chord changes. Some vocal songs show up about half way through, but the singing is so drenched in reverb it’s hard to grab onto it. And truly it has no real relationship to the Clash or the Mesaleros. I think there’s a couple of really great tunes, but that the rest of it feels a bit like… a soundtrack. - Will Seeley
