John Doyle has emerged as an important figure in Irish traditional music. He co-founded the Irish/American band Solas more than a decade ago, and he now releases his second solo CD. It’s an all-star effort, with Doyle getting help from Alison Brown, Tim O’Brien and Linda Thompson just to name a few guests that appear on “Wayward Son.” This showing is no doubt a testament to how well people think of Doyle. “Wayward Son” features both old-time Irish songs and Doyle’s original tunes that are firmly based in Celtic tradition. He has a gentle voice with an appealing lilt that’s made for this music. Doyle is also a fabulous guitarist as evident in the instrumental numbers that are sprinkled on the CD. Notable tracks include the original “Bitter The Parting,” the lovely “The Month of January” with Thompson, and the murder tale “Little Sadie.” The CD closes with “The Cocks are Crowing,” a traditional number that has Doyle singing with only his guitar for accompaniment. It’s a wonderful few minutes that reminds listeners of the beauty of Irish folk music. - D. Kimura
