Judas Priest
Angel of Retribution
Columbia

Almost everyone would agree that Black Sabbath were the founding fathers of heavy metal, but it was Judas Priest that took the genre to the next level, spawning a whole sect of worshipers and imitators. As the leaders of the “New Wave of British Heavy Metal”, Priest released a number of influential albums throughout the 70's and 80's that laid the groundwork for nearly all metal to come . In 1990 they released Painkiller, arguably the best album of their extensive career but sadly the last for longtime frontman Rob Halford. Well, Priest is back with Angel of Retribution and head-bangers can rejoice because the leather-loving Halford is once again in the line-up for this newest effort. Described as a sequel to Sad Wings of Destiny the album hits the ground running with “Judas Rising”, a thunderous attack of rapid-fire drum work, monster guitar riffs and trademark Halford wailing reminiscent of Painkiller. From there the records eases back on the throttle and takes the listener on a tour through the various styles of the band from the ballads “Angel” and “Eulogy”, to the rock n’ roll sound of “Wheels of Fire” and “Revolution.” Even devotees of the heavier side of Priest will enjoy “Demonizer” and “Hellrider.” Overall fans should be pleased with this album. While it does have its corny moments, a 13 minute epic about the Loch Ness monster comes to mind, it successfully blends the true-metal and rock sound of 70's era Priest with the faster and more aggressive feel of their modern albums. Is Angel of Retribution destined to be a classic? Maybe not. Is it a solid effort from a group with a lot of expectations on its shoulders? Definitely. It just remains to be seen if Halford can still tour with 25 pounds of steel studs and leather on his back.Matt Sauza
