The
Juliana Theory
Deadbeat Sweetheartbeat
Paper Fist/Abacus Records
The Juliana Theory returns with its fourth album, Deadbeat
Sweetheartbeat. It's a return to form of sorts for the
five-member alt-rock band from Pennsylvania. "It sounds like Emotion
Is Dead (the band's second album) on crystal meth,"
said bassist Chad Alan. Swirling guitar-driven rhythms mark many of
the songs, and the darker theme of the album centers around goodbyes.
The songs are a series of farewells to both relationships and places.
The fast and lively "This Is A Lovesong … For The Loveless"
is a strong opener. It is followed by the more pop sounds of "We
Make The Road By Walking." "Shotgun Serenade" starts
off softly, and just when you settle into listening to a ballad, it
busts open with a burst of noise. The song "10,000 Questions"
takes on the feel of a rock anthem. The band doesn't know many slow
songs, and Brett Detar's vocals are intense throughout the 10-song album.
(There's a hidden 11th track.) Overall, Deadbeat Sweetheartbeat
has a raw quality, which comes from much of the album being recorded
in a "live" format. The CD was self-funded without label support.
The album is produced by John Travis (Social Distortion and Kid Rock).
