Radio listeners will know KT Tunstall from her gritty song “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” The surprise is the rest of the CD is just as good, especially her pop gem “Suddenly I See.” Tunstall is singer-songwriter-guitarist with a throaty voice and a knack for clever melodies. She hails from Scotland, but sounds as if she could have come from Memphis or Muscle Shoals. She brings both rock and folk influences to her music, which is often driven by a dark, bluesy undercurrent. This combination is fully realized on her splendid debut, Eye to the Telescope. She’s been compared to everyone from Fiona Apple to Dido to Sheryl Crow. Those comparisons aren’t quite right. What makes Tunstall unique is that her music has more attitude than many of today’s pop songstresses could ever muster. Highly recommended. - D. Kimura
