Roy Orbison
A Black & White Night

Shot in Los Angeles in 1987, Roy Orbison is joined by an all-star backing band of fans and devotees that includes Bruce Springsteen, T-Bone Burnette, Tom Waits, k.d. lang, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, James Burton, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Jennifer Warnes…..hmmm..did I leave anyone out? Filmed in glorious black & white, Orbison performs 16 of his biggest hits to a small and appreciative crowd at the now defunct Coconut Grove. Opening the show with “Only The Lonely,” Roy demonstrates an incredible vocal range (Bonnie Raitt describes it as ‘operatic’) seemingly undiminished by age, particularly when he reaches for his trademark falsetto. His superstar players never hog the spotlight (unless they’re asked to) and appear overjoyed to be playing with this legendary figure. The digital transfer is sharp, as is the surround-sound mix. The DVD is available in two packages: one containing a second disc featuring just the music portion in either hybrid SACD, or DVD-Audio, both in Dolby 5.1. -- David Bassin
