Scary Kids Scaring Kids
The City Sleeps In Flames
Immortal Records

The band’s name serves as a clue to the kind of music its plays. Scary Kids Scaring Kids is a hard-core band featuring three guitarists, a bassist, a keyboardist and a drummer. Made up of a group of friends from high school, the group recorded its first EP while members were still seniors in Gilbert, Ariz. The band has performed more than 300 shows in the last 18 months and now releases the full-length The City Sleeps in Flames.

Screeching guitars and singer Tyson Stevens’ vocal assaults define the group, which borrows its name from a song by emo band Cap’n Jazz. Scary Kids also draws from other influences, including such diverse musical acts as Beloved, Reggie and the Full Effect and Radiohead. The album reflects this, with nods to punk, metal and classic rock.

The best thing about the CD is the nimble guitar work, and Stevens shows some range as a singer, especially in the few quieter moments. The band is also loaded with youthful intensity, but overall it doesn’t break any new ground. The record is produced, engineered and mixed by Brian McTernan, who has worked with Thrice, The Movielife and Recover. - D. Kimura
