Telluride Bluegrass Festival
Telluride Bluegrass Festival 30 Years
Rounder Records

Performances from the 2003 Telluride Bluegrass Festival are preserved on this new CD. The year was the 30th anniversary of the venerable event. There’s a varied selection of music on the album, with new and old acts represented on the 13-song collection. There’s the still-new Nickel Creek providing a bluegrass take on the Beatles’ “Taxman” and the longtime Nitty Gritty Dirt Band doing “Fishin’ in the Dark.” Other bluegrass performers featured include Tim O’Brien and the Yonder Mountain String Band. Although Telluride is billed as a bluegrass festival, it is more progressive than that. We catch a glimpse of that here with the performance of Aussie country singer Kasey Chambers singing her original “Not Pretty Enough” and the String Cheese Incident with Martin Sexton reviving the Stevie Wonder tune “I Wish.” The Boomchicks, with Mary Chapin Carpenter on guitar and Alison Brown on banjo, jam on “Unchained Melody” as John Cowan provides the vocals. - D.
