Anyone smitten by Joey Burns and John Convertino’s musical vision
of a frontier where mariachis play rock & roll in some unnamed burg
on the Mexican border will want to own this disc. Filmed in 2002 during
London’s Beyond Nashville festival, Calexico rode into town on
the heels of “Feast Of Wire” – their fourth album
and the reputation of having won Time Out’s Gig Of The Year award
two years in a row. About halfway through their set at the Barbican
auditorium, they were joined by Tucson’s Mariachi Luz De Luna
– an eight-piece band that had accompanied Calexico in the past.
With the addition of French chanteuse Francoiz Breut, their number swelled
to 18, giving the music a grace and majesty that was overwhelming and
at the end of their 90-minute set, anyone who wasn’t already a
fan had been converted. Filmed in widescreen and 5.1 surround, the band
looks and sounds as good as their music. The abundant bonus features
include several documentaries about Calexico, their life on the road,
the making of “Feast Of Wire” and three colorful videos
from John Pirozzi.
