I’ve reviewed several Sun Ra films in months past, but so far this is the strangest. Directed by Phill Niblock in 1966, this abstract work features the Arkestra in performance, shot in extreme close-up. The catch is, it’s in black & white and reverse negative, making for a most psychedelic experience. Extra features include Sun Ra’s philosophical proclamations set against a library of photos that have rarely been seen, if ever.
