Much has been said about this beautiful story of two young men who
go off in search of adventure on the back of a beat-up motorcycle across
South America. It’s a true story based on the letters of Ernesto
“Che” Guevara, but does nothing to explain his transformation
into a militant, revolutionary leader years later, at least not directly.
Instead, it follows Che and his friend Alberto Granado as they travel
from Buenos Aires through Chile, Peru, Columbia and Venezuela, meeting
an assortment of people along the way and finally arriving at their
destination – a leper colony, where they remain for a time to
assist the doctors in their work. As Che and Alberto navigate the continent
and encounter impoverished peasants, it’s easy to see why he identified
with the oppressed, but begs the question of why he chose a path of
violence in his final years. Whatever the reason, this is a story that
celebrates life and nature equally. Gael Garcia Bernal and Rodrigo de
la Serna are both charming and demand your attention every moment they’re
onscreen.
