Elkland

Sony/BMG

Holy synth! This album is jam packed of fun songs to dance to. It has some pretty ballads to sing along with and get soft on. Yet the fast tracks are infused with energy and mixed very well, the single “Apart” is an awesome song, which has great harmonic progression, and while the song is upbeat, the lyrics are capriciously desperate with the want of being needed. The vocalist Jon Pierce has a voice which oozes with boyish charm reminiscent of Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, or even better dramatic like Yaz. The order of the album could have used a bit of rearranging, the fact that it jumps from slow to fast and back again, only works because thematically they are all about his feelings for a special someone, like the Smiths. The song “Talking on the Phone” features a synth breakdown that just screams true synth pop, none of this pseudo-techno sub genre, synth pop is back and some of these bands embrace the sound. Elkland embraced it and ran, straight into becoming the opening band for Erasure on their tour this year... awesome! -- Clara Flores
